Visa applicants who live in Greater Sydney and surrounding areas must attend in person to apply for a visa unless you apply online (single-entry tourism visa only - start taking the applications from 12:00pm 1st February 2024 ) or apply by agents.


Applicants who live in distant areas (Newcastle and northward in NSW, Lithgow and westward in NSW, Nowra and southward in NSW, and anywhere in NT) may apply by post.


Please check the required documents. When you are ready to apply for a visa, please make an appointment online to schedule a visit to our office through our website below.

Please note that we can only accept your visa application 3 months prior to entry as a visa is valid only for 3 months.

We do NOT accept a walk-in applications. Visa applicants without an appointment will NOT be allowed to enter our office.

1. General rules for visa application

Please make an appointment online to schedule a visit to our office through our website.
No walk-in accepted.

If you hold a "Certificate of Eligibility" and need a visa to travel to Japan soon but cannot make an online appointment, please contact us for further assistance.
Processing Time
The minimum assessment time is 5 business days for all visas*.
There is NO priority or urgent processing service.
Please consider applying for a visa through an agent if it is urgent.
Visa Validity
Single Entry Visa is only valid for 3 months. You must enter Japan within this time frame.
We will NOT accept any visa applications more than 3 months before your departure date.

Multiple Entry Visa is generally valid for 1-5 years

Proxy/Authorization Letter
Applicants (including minors) may authorise a proxy to lodge your application, or to collect your passport after the assessment .

You will need to provide an authorisation letter and your representative must show a valid photo ID when lodging and picking up.
Your passport
Your passport will be kept at the Consulate during assessment (excluding online applications).

As long as your passport is valid during the time of your stay in Japan, your passport’s validity can be shorter than 6 months***.

* In some cases, applications need to be referred to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan. It may take up to 2 months or more to complete the process.
** If you have an Australian travel document/certificate of identity documents, please send your query to the Consulate’s Visa Section: cgryoji@sy.mofa.go.jp
***We strongly recommend that you check the regulations of your airline before traveling with a passport that has less than 6 months validity.

3. Assessment

The minimum assessment time is 5 business days.
It generally takes longer if additional documents are required. We will call you if we need more information for further assessment.
In some cases, applications need to be referred to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, and it can take up to 2 months or more to complete the process.
There is NO priority processing service.

We may request more documents when you lodge an application or when we review your application.

*Australian citizens are exempt from visa fees.
Some other countries are also exempt from visa fees. Please check the visa fee exemption countries list to find out if your visa fee is waived.
* Payment is due at the time of PICKUP.
* We accept CASH only (Please prepare cash in the exact amount). We DO NOT accept personal cheques and credit cards.
* Visa fees are revised on 1st April each year.
