"Matsuri - Japan Festival"

On 8 December, around 40,000 people gathered at Tumbalong Park in Darling Harbour for the annual "Matsuri - Japan Festival-". The festival aimed to introduce Japanese culture through live presentations of Taiko drums and Bonodori performances. Tea ceremony, calligraphy, origami and flower arrangement workshops were also offered, as well as a range of Japanese food and tourist information.

Consul-General Takewaka joins “Japan Roadshow 2018”

On 6 December, Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) held “Japan Roadshow 2018” in Sydney. JNTO and guest speakers made presentations, and representatives from Japanese local governments, tourism companies and local tourism agencies, had active discussions on business.

In his speech, Consul-General Keizo Takewaka mentioned that Australian travellers to Japan have been increasing and the Rugby World Cup, 2020 Olympics and Paralympics to be held in Japan are great opportunities for increasing inbound tourism. He also said that the event is a special occasion to build on the strong relationship between the Japanese and Australian tourism industries.

Ms Atsuko Kobayashi Radcliffe, Mr Sadaharu Muramatsu and Sydney Sakura Choir receive Consul-General's Commendations

On 4 December, Ms Atsuko Kobayashi Radcliffe, Mr Sadaharu Muramatsu and Sydney Sakura Choir received Consul-General's Commendations.

Ms Atsuko Kobayashi Radcliffe is the first Japanese to establish a winery in Australia. She has conducted Sake tastings at her own winery. She has been appointed a judge of the Sake Category at the International Wine Challenge and "Asia Pacific Women in Business 'Bridge Woman'", the latter by the Cabinet Office of Japan. Through her activities, she contributes to mutual understanding between Japan and Australia.

Mr Muramatsu conducts several orchestras in Sydney including Strathfield Symphony Orchestra as well as Sydney Sakura Choir. He is a talented conductor and contributes to mutual understanding between both countries.

Sydney Sakura Choir was established 2014 by Japanese people living in Sydney. They participate actively in Japan-related events including the Cherry Blossom Festival in Cowra. They also contribute to mutual understanding and friendship through singing Japanese songs.

Consul-General Takewaka’s visit to Canterbury Bankstown City

On 4 December, Consul-General Takewaka visited Canterbury Bankstown City to meet Mayor Clr Khal Asfour. Canterbury Bankstown City has a sister-city relationship with Suita City of Osaka Prefecture.

Reception in Celebration of His Majesty the Emperor’s Birthday

On 30 November, the Consul-General Keizo Takewaka hosted a reception at his residence in celebration of the 85th birthday of His Majesty the Emperor. Some two hundred guests from various fields attended the event.

In his speech, the Consul-General mentioned last month’s Japan-Australia Summit meeting in Darwin between Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Prime Minister Scott Morrison, refering to the Special Strategic Partnership and close bilateral relations that Japan and Australia share. Mr Jonathan O’Dea MP, Parliamentary Secretary to the Premier and Treasurer of New South Wales, attended the reception representing Premier Berejiklian. After expressing his congratulations to His Majesty the Emperor, Mr O’Dea spoke of the close cultural bond between the two countries citing the impressive number of students taking Japanese as a second language in Australia as well as the popularity of Japan as a destination for Australian travellers.

At the reception, a variety of Japanese foods were served, including sushi and wagyu, together with saké. There were booths promoting Japanese airline companies, the Shinkansen bullet train, Japanese food and other Japanese products. A live performance by a Japanese Taiko drumming group also entertained the guests.

Calligraphy workshop at St Charles Catholic Primary School

On 28 November, the Consulate-General of Japan in Sydney held a calligraphy workshop at St Charles Catholic Primary Shool, as part of the school visit programme.

Australia-Japan Roundtable with the Hon Niall Blair as the guest speaker

On 26 November, the Australia-Japan Roundtable was held at the Consul-General’s Official Residence. The Hon. Niall Blair, Minister for Primary Industries, Minister for Regional Water, and Minister for Trade and Industry, attended as the guest speaker and many Japanese and Australian business people participated.

In his opening remarks, Consul-General Takewaka touched upon the deep trust between Japan and Australia having been reaffirmed through the recent Prime Minister’s meeting. He welcomed the recent commitments of Japanese companies in the Western Sydney development and the MoC signed between the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Japan and the NSW Department of Primary Industries. Mr Takewaka also mentioned that people-to-people exchange is a hallmark of the strong friendship between the peoples of NSW and Japan.

Minister Blair spoke about more collaboration to be expected in the area of agriculture between the two countries under the recent MoC. He also expressed his hope for Japanese companies’ active contribution to the development of Western Sydney.

At the venue, a booth was set up to showcase Japanese food including Japanese persimmons from Wakayama Prefecture and Japanese Wagyu beef, which have recently been allowed access to Australia.

Japanese Culture Day in Darwin

On 17th November, Consul-General Takewaka attended the Japanese Culture Day festival in Darwin. At this festival, organized by AJANT (Australian-Japanese Association of the Northern Territory), Taiko, Choir, Koto, Kendo, Aikido, dance and calligraphy performances were held.

Delegation from Kamaishi City visits the Consulate-General

On 7 November, Consul-General Keizo Takewaka welcomed a delegation led by Deputy Mayor Hideki Yamazaki from Kamaishi City, Iwate Prefecture, and received an explanation about the "Arigato" (Thank you) Host Town for Supporting Reconstruction after suffering from the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011.

Kamaishi City is the only venue of Rugby World Cup 2019 in the Tohoku region of Japan.

The Japanese Institute of Certified Public Accountants (JICPA) visit Sydney

On 6 November, Consul-General Takewaka attended the Japan Night session hosted by JICPA which visited Sydney to participate in the 20th World Congress of Accountants, and delivered welcome remarks.

Consul-General Takewaka's visit to Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council

On 29 October, Consul-General Takewaka visited Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council to meet Mayor Tim Overall. Queanbeyan-Palerang has a sister city relationship with Minami Alps City of Yamanashi Prefecture and it has a Sister City Park.

Ishikawa Food Culture Proposal Meeting in Sydney

On 21 October, Consul-General Takewaka attended a ceremony for the IJSP (Ishikawa Japanese Study Program) agreement, which was signed by Governor Tanimoto of Ishikawa Prefecture and Ms Fitzpatrick, President of the ACT AJS (Australia-Japan Societies), and aims to expand the number of participants studying Japanese and Japanese culture through home stay programs. On 22 October, he attended the “Ishikawa Food Culture Proposal Meeting in Sydney” which aims to attract tourists leading up to the 2019 Rugby World Cup and the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Consul-General Takewaka expressed his respect for the long-lasting IJSP and mentioned that the Rugby World Cup and the Olympic and Paralympic Games are a great opportunity to promote the historic natural features and rich nature of Ishikawa Prefecture to Australian people. He expressed his hope that Ishikawa’s mission would be a great success into the future.

Japanese Cultural Presentation at 2018 Ryde Granny Smith Festival

On 20 October, the City of Ryde held its annual Granny Smith Festival. As part of the Festival, the Consulate-General of Japan in Sydney presented “Drums & Dance from Japan” featuring Sydney Soran Odoritai and Wadaiko Rindo, Sydney, to introduce Japanese culture. Hundreds of people watched the performance.

National Conference of Australia-Japan Societies and the Japanese Foreign Minister's Commendation Ceremony

On 19 October, Consul-General Keizo Takewaka hosted a reception on the occasion of National Conference of Australia-Japan Societies and the Japanese Foreign Minister's Commendation Ceremony at which three NSW residents were recognised for their contribution to Japan-Australia relations - Mr Katsunori Tokura, Mrs Tazuko McLaren OAM, and Dr William (Bill) Purcell.

Around 100 people attended the reception. Later in the evening, members of Lismore-based choir Isabella a cappella were presented with a Consul-General's Commendation for their contribution to Japan-Australia relations and then guests were able to enjoy a special musical performance.

Kengo Kuma & Koichi Takada: In Conversation

On 19 October, a talk by world-renowned Japanese architect, Mr Kengo Kuma, and leading Sydney-based Japanese architect, Mr Koichi Takada, took place in Sydney. Mr Kuma and Mr Takada talked about the buildings they have designed in the past, including the New National Stadium in Tokyo, main stadium for the Tokyo Olympic/Paralympic Games in 2020, and a residential project in Sydney. John Coates, chairman of the International Olympic Committee's Coordination Commission for the Tokyo 2020 Games, also attended.

At the event, a sake tasting booth was set up to promote Japanese sake, with the contribution of Japanese sake distributors in Sydney.

The 56th Annual Joint Business Conference AJBCC

From 14 to 16 October, the 56th Annual Joint Business Conference AJBCC was held in Sydney. At the conference, more than 400 Australian and Japanese business executives, including Dr Akio Mimura AC (Chairman, JABCC and Honorary Chairman, Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corporation) as a representative on the Japanese side and Sir Rod Eddington AO (President AJBCC and Chairman, Asia Pacific Advisory Council, JP Morgan) as a representative on the Australian side, got together and exchanged their opinions about the economic relations between the two countries on the theme of "Taking the Long View". Women played an active role in the conference, moderating six of the seven sessions. The next conference will be held from 7 to 9 October next year in Osaka.

In parallel with the conference, the NSW Government signed "two international investment agreements with two of Japan's biggest multinationals to establish a presence in the Western Sydney Aerotropolis".

Japanese Festival at Campbelltown Arts Centre

On 6 October, Consul-General Takewaka attended the Japanese Festival held on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the Campbelltown Arts Centre. Celebrating the Campbelltown-Koshigaya Sister City relationship, the event included the performance of taiko drumming, calligraphy, Bonsai, Koto, and Origami. From Campbelltown, Cr Meg Oates, Cr Ben Gilhoime, Cr Masood Chowdhury, Cr Karen Hunt, Mr. David Simonds, President of Campbelltown Koshigaya Sister Cities Association, and Mr. Michael Dagostino, Director of Campbelltown Arts Centre, attended the event.

Cowra Cherry Blossom Festival and Service of Respect

On 22 and 23 September, Consul-General Takewaka attended the Cherry Blossom Festival at Cowra Japanese Garden, and the Service of Respect at the Cowra War Cemeteries. Both events were attended by Cr Bill West, Mayor of Cowra, The Hon. David Elliot, Minister for Veteran Affairs, Minister for Corrections and Minister for Counter Terrorism, and Ms Stephanie Cooke, Member of the NSW Legislative Assembly. Around 40 Japanese residents from Sydney joined the Service of Respect. Next year, 2019, will mark the 75th year after the Cowra Break-out.

Strathfield Symphony Orchestra Concert

On 15 September, Consul-General Takewaka attended a concert by the Strathfield Symphony Orchestra Concert (SSO). SSO, whose conductor is Mr. Sadaharu Muramatsu, will celebrate their 50th anniversary next year. Sydney Sakura Choir, which consists of about 50 Japanese community members, also performs as part of SSO.

2018 Strathfield Spring Festival

On 1 September, Strathfield Council held its annual Spring Festival. As part of the Festival, the Consulate-General of Japan in Sydney presented Wadaiko Rindo Sydney, who performed on the Demonstration Stage to an enthusiastic, all-ages crowd of locals and visitors, who were enjoying the fine weather, food and entertainment on offer at Strathfield Park.

Post Great East Japan Earthquake Documentary Movie “Life Goes On”

On 26 August, the Post Great East Japan Earthquake Documentary Movie “Life Goes On” was screened at the Art Gallery of NSW, and 310 people viewed it. Mrs. Ryoko Endo, one of the cast of the movie, visited Sydney from Ishinomaki City for the screening. Consul-General Keizo Takewaka, who also viewed the movie, thanked Mrs. Edo for sharing her strength and hopes with the audience.

18th Annual Bonsai Society Exhibition

On 25 August, Consul-General Takewaka and Mrs. Takewaka visited the 18th Annual Bonsai Exhibition with the guidance of Patron Megumi Bennett and President Jacki Gracey of the Bonsai Society of Sydney Inc.

Consul-General Takewaka's visit to Coffs Harbour

On 21 and 22 August, Consul-General Takewaka visited Coffs Harbour City to participate in the commemorative events to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Sister City affiliation between Coffs Harbour and Sasebo.

From Sasebo City, a delegation led by Mayor Tomonaga visited Coffs Harbour to attend a dinner hosted by Mayor Denise Knight on the 21st, as well as the commemorative ceremony at the Japanese Garden on the 22nd. The ceremony included the commemorative planting of a black pine tree, a carp-streamer donation from Sasebo City, and the opening of the friendship bridge. A choir of 18 students from Seiwa Junior & Senior High School sang the national anthems of Australia and Japan at the ceremony.

Japanese Wagyu Beef Relaunch Reception

On 20 August, the “JAPANESE WAGYU BEEF RELAUNCH RECEPTION” was held in Sydney. Parliamentary Vice-Minister Ryousuke Kouzuki, from the Japanese Agricultural Ministry, flew into Sydney to promote Japanese Wagyu beef in Australia.

During the reception, Parliamentary Vice-Minister Kouzuki, along with Consul-General Takewaka and the The Hon. Dominello, NSW Minister for Finance, Services and Property, took part in “Kagami-biraki”, which is a ceremonial breaking open of sake barrels and toast ceremony. Parliamentary Vice-Minister Kouzuki personally served those present, and guests sampled Japanese wagyu beef steak and “Shabu-shabu”.

78th Biennial International Law Association (ILA) Conference

On 20 August, Consul-General Keizo Takewaka was delighted to host a reception for attendees of the 78th Biennial International Law Association (ILA) Conference currently being held in Sydney (19-24 Aug). Established in 1873, the ILA is a non-governmental organisation which promotes the study and development of international law, as well as international understanding of and respect for international law. The 79th ILA Conference will be held in Kyoto.

NSW Cross-sectoral Japanese Teachers' Conference 2018

On 17 August, Consul-General Keizo Takewaka attended the NSW Cross-sectoral Japanese Teachers' Conference 2018, and stated that the Japanese language education in NSW needs further support. More than 200 Japanese language teachers attended this conference. Ms Anne de Kretser, Director of the Melbourne Centre for Japanese Language Education, also joined.

Consul-General Takewaka's visit to Wollongong City

On 15 August, Consul-General Keizo Takewaka visited Wollongong City to participate in the 2018 Kawasaki International Friendship Ambassadors exchange program, which marked its 27th year. From Kawasaki City, four elementary school students, who had been selected out of 5205 applicants, attended as Kawasaki International Friendship Ambassadors. Lord Mayor Cr Gordon Bradbery AM, as well as Mr. Hiroshi Horigome, Director General Manager of Kawasaki Shinkin Bank, also joined. This year is the 30th anniversary of the sister city relationship between Kawasaki City and Wollongong City.

Consul-General Takewaka's visit to Hawkesbury City

On 10 August, Consul-General Takewaka visited Hawkesbury City and attended the celebration of the 30th sister city relationship anniversary between Kyotamba of Kyoto Prefecture and Hawkesbury, together with Mayor Mary Lyons-Buckett of Hawkesbury City Council. From Kyotamba, six students are now visiting Hawkesbury City for a four week home stay.

Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr Iwao Horii's visit to Sydney

On 3 August, Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr Iwao Horii, visited Sydney and met with Father Paul Glynn. After the meeting, Mr Horii visited Father Paul Glynn's late brother, Father Tony Glynn's grave. The Glynn brothers made a great contribution to establish the first sister city relationship between Japan and Australia soon after the end of WWII.

High school student delegation from Nagoya city visits Sydney

On 31 July, a delegation of high school students from Nagoya city, which is the sister city of Sydney, visited Sydney.

In his speech at Town Hall, Consul-General Keizo Takewaka welcomed the delegation and expressed his hope for the further development of the relationship built by both cities over 28 years.

NSW Investment Promotion Program for Japanese Infrastructure & Medical Delegation

On 23 and 24 July, the New South Wales Government hosted an investment promotion event for the Japanese Infrastructure & Medical Delegation. In his opening remarks at the introduction session, Consul-General Keizo Takewaka expressed his hope that Japanese companies’ active involvement in the fast growing infrastructure industry in NSW would help promote overall economic growth in Japan and Australia.

The Hon Gladys Berejiklian, the Premier of NSW, hosted a welcome reception at the NSW Parliament House on the evening of 23 July. At the reception, she said she hoped that the relationship between Japan and Australia, as well as NSW, would become stronger. The Premier also encouraged more investment to be made by Japanese companies to projects in NSW, such as developments in Western Sydney.

On the following day, the delegation was invited to visit Westmead Health, Education and Research Super Precinct. Consul-General Takewaka, who made a closing remark, wrapped up the two day event and expressed his hope for further development in the business relationship between Japan and NSW.

Meeting with Members of Nagasaki Prefectural Assembly

On 23 July, Consul-General Keizo Takewaka received a visit by members of the Nagasaki Prefectural Assembly. At the meeting, Mr Takewaka made a briefing on the close and good relationship between Japan and NSW in various areas such as economy, tourism and culture.

Consul-General Takewaka’s Visit to Darwin

On 18 July, Consul-General Keizo Takewaka visited Darwin and met with the Chief Minister, the Hon. Michael Gunner and Minister for Aboriginal Affairs, Primary Industry and Resources and Arafura Games, the Hon Ken Vowles.

JET Programme Farewell Reception

On 17 July, the 2018 Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Programme Farewell Reception was held at the Consul-General’s official residence. Consul-General Keizo Takewaka delivered an opening address. In his address, he offered his congratulations to the JET Programme participants and expressed his expectation that the participants will enjoy their life in Japan and form bonds with Japanese people.

The participants will be assigned to schools and municipalities throughout Japan to assist with language education and with projects related to international activities. The total number of new participants from New South Wales is 32.

The Australian Sogetsu Teachers Association Inc, New South Wales Branch and Mrs Tae Gessner Tae receive Consul-General's Commendation

On 12 July, The Australian Sogetsu Teachers Association Inc, New South Wales Branch and Mrs Tae Gessner received Consul-General's Commendations.

The Australian Sogetsu Teachers Association Inc, New South Wales Branch was recognized for their contribution in promoting Ikebana and Japanese culture through the many exhibitions they have held since they were established in 1960.

Mrs Tae Gessner was recognized for her contribution in promoting kimono and Japanese traditional culture through her kimono dressing and kimono shows since her first kimono workshop in 2013.

JCS Japanese School receive Consul-General's Commendation

On 11 July, JCS (Japan Club of Sydney) Japanese School received the Consul-General's Commendation. They were recognised for their contribution to language and cultural education in the Sydney Japanese community since 1992, and currently run three Japanese schools on Saturdays at Dundas, Edgecliff, and in the CBD.

Consul-General Takewaka joins “SAKE MASTERCLASS & SHOWCASE”

On 21 June, the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) and the Japan Sake And Shochu Makers Association (JSS) held “SAKE MASTERCLASS & SHOWCASE” in Sydney. Sake makers from all over japan visited Sydney, and had business talks with local trading companies, representatives of local restaurants and sommeliers. JSS director, Mr Hamada and Sake sommelier, Mr Leigh Hudson, also gave lectures on sake.

In his speech, Consul-General Keizo Takewaka mentioned that there are many types of sake that not only match Japanese food, but also go well with Western cuisine. He trusted that the day’s business discussions and seminar would help create new and interesting opportunities for all parties involved.

Consul-General Takewaka's visit to Blue Mountains City

On 14 June, Consul-General Keizo Takewaka visited Blue Mountains City, which is a sister city of Sanda City of Hyogo Prefecture. After having talks with Mayor Mark Greenhill and Councillor Romola Hollywood on the previous day, Consul-General Takewaka met Deputy Mayor Chris Van der Kley, and Councillor Shae Foenander, as well as members of the Sister City Committee including Chairman Allan Graham, Ms. Colleen Kime and Ms. Leigh J. Roden.

Matsuri Japan Festival in Parramatta 2018

On 9 June, “Matsuri Japan Festival in Parramatta 2018” was held in Parramatta. “Matsuri Japan Festival in Parramatta 2018” is a Japanese festival organized by the Japan Club of Sydney, and this was the first time it was held. Many people came to the festival and enjoyed Japanese tea ceremony, Ikebana, and Origami, among other activities. The Consulate-General of Japan in Sydney held a calligraphy workshop.

Consul-General Takewaka's visit to Campbelltown City

On 6 June, Consul-General Keizo Takewaka visited Campbelltown City, which is a sister city of Koshigaya City of Saitama Prefecture. 76th Anniversary Memorial Service for HMAS Kuttabul

On 1 June, at the Kuttabul Naval Base, a memorial service was held to commemorate the 76th anniversary of the attack on Sydney Harbour by Japanese midget submarines. The Consul-General of Japan, Mr Keizo Takewaka, was invited to the ceremony and laid a wreath.

At the ceremony, the 21 names of the fallen sailors on the HMAS Kuttabul sunk in the attack, and the names of the six Japanese submariners who lost their lives, were read by a student from a local high school and a student from Sydney Japanese International School.

On 29 May, the Sydney Consular Women’s Club luncheon was held at the Consul-General’s residence. A kimono demonstration and a tea ceremony were also held at the luncheon.

On 27 May, Consul-General Takewaka attended the 35th anniversary luncheon of the Japan Club of Sydney (JCS).

Consul-General Takewaka joins “JAPAN ROAD SHOW”

On 22 May, JNTO (Japan National Tourism Organization) held “JAPAN ROAD SHOW” in Sydney. JNTO and guest speakers made presentations, and representatives from Japanese local governments and companies, as well as local tourism agencies, had active business discussions at the event.

In his speech, Consul-General Keizo Takewaka mentioned that Australian travelers to Japan spent the most among foreign travelers and this fact demonstrates the popularity of Japan as a destination of choice for Australians. He also expressed his expectation that this event is a great chance for participants to make new connections and build on the strong relationship between the Japanese and Australian tourism industries.

Dinner with Ms Lisa Ono

On 18 May, Consul-General Takewaka hosted dinner for Ms Lisa Ono, a famous Japanese Bossa Nova singer who visited Sydney for her first-ever concert at the Sydney Opera House on 19 May. The dinner was joined by members of the Japanese community in Sydney.

Consul-General Takewaka’s Visit to the Hills Shire

On 8 May, Consul-General Keizo Takewaka visited the Hills Shire. He met with the Mayor of the Hills Shire Michelle Byrne, Cr Reena Jethi, the Hon. David Elliott, Minister for Counter Terrorism, Corrections and Veteran Affairs, and the Hon. Ray Williams, Minister for Multiculturalism and Disability Services. Both Ministers were elected as NSW Members of Parliament from the Hills Shire.

The Medal of the Order of Australia for Mrs Tazuko McLaren

On 3 May, Mrs Tazuko McLaren (Japan Exchange Co-ordinator and Japanese language lecturer, Southern Cross University) received the Medal of the Order of Australia in recognition of her longstanding service to education, and to Japan-Australia relations.

Consul-General Keizo Takewaka celebrated her achievement with Fr Paul Glynn who contributed to establishing the sister-city relationship between Yamato Takada City in Nara Prefecture and Lismore City Council.

Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs Mr Iwao Horii visits Cowra

On 28 April, the Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr Iwao Horii visited Cowra and met with Mayor Bill West and Cowra-Japan Society Director Tony Mooney. Mr Horii expressed his gratitude for Cowra's continued contribution to Japan-Australia relations, and exchanged views on how to strengthen ties in the future. He also toured the Cowra Japanese Garden and Cultural Centre, the Prisoner of War camp site, and the cemeteries where he laid floral wreathes to pay his respects to the fallen of both countries.

Visit by Central Federation of Societies of Commerce and Industry, Japan

On 16 April, a delegation from the Central Federation of Societies of Commerce and Industry, Japan (CFSCIJ), led by Mr Yoshifumi Ishizawa, the Chairman of CFSCIJ, visited Sydney. Consul-General Takewaka welcomed them to his residence and exchanged views in regard to the Japan-Australia relationship, particularly in the economic area, together with Mr Hiroyuki Nakazato, the Managing Director of JETRO Sydney.

“IKEBANA nature intertwining” Opening

On 15 April, Consul-General Keizo Takewaka participated in the opening of “IKEBANA nature intertwining”, hosted by the Australian Sogetsu Teachers Association NSW. The Australian Sogetsu Teachers Association NSW was established 58 years ago and this year marks the 21st exhibition at the Royal Botanic Garden. The Australian Sogetsu Teachers Association NSW has also participated at the Matsuri-Japan Festival in Willoughby and the Matsuri-Japan Festival in Darling Harbour, contributing to the promotion of the Japan-Australia friendship.

Consul-General Takewaka’s Visit to Port Stephens

On 4 April, Consul-General Keizo Takewaka visited Port Stephens, which formed a sister city relationship with Yugawara Town in Kanagawa Prefecture in 1998, and Tateyama City in Chiba Prefecture in 2009. Mr Takewaka met with Mayor Ryan Palmer and Mr Nigel Dique, Chairman of the Port Stephens Sister Cities Committee.

Consul-General Takewaka's Visit to Northern Beaches Council

On 28 March, Consul-General Keizo Takewaka visited Northern Beaches Council and met with Mayor Michael Regan who took office after the September local government election last year. After the local government amalgamation, Northern Beaches Council has sister city relationships with Taito City in Tokyo (established in 1982), Odawara City in Kanagawa Prefecture (established in 1990), Tadaoka Town in Osaka Prefecture (established in 1995), and Chichibu City in Saitama Prefecture (established in 1996).

Consul-General Takewaka visits the City of Parramatta

On 28 March, Consul-General Keizo Takewaka visited the City of Parramatta, which includes Westmead Medical Precinct and Olympic Park, and has been developing rapidly in recent years. Mr Takewaka met with Lord Mayor Andrew Wilson and the Lord Mayor expressed great appreciation for Japan’s interest in the City of Parramatta.

Japanese Cuisine and Food Culture

On 24 March, the Consulate-General of Japan in Sydney and the Australian-Japanese Association in the NT co-hosted “Japanese Cuisine and Food Culture” with Mr Dekura, food researcher, in Darwin. Mr Dekura gave a lecture on the basics of Japanese cuisine (washoku) and Japanese food culture, as well as a demonstration of Japanese cooking.

Consul-General Takewaka’s Visit to Snowy Monaro Regional Council

On 23 March, Consul-General Keizo Takewaka visited Snowy Monaro Regional Council, which established a sister city relationship with Yamaga City in Kumamoto Prefecture in 1975, and Kusatsu Town in Gunma Prefecture in 1991. Mr Takewaka met with Mayor John Rooney, the President of Cooma Lions Club and the Principal of Monaro High School. After the meeting, Mr Rooney took Mr Takewaka on a tour of Snowy Hydro Limited.

Port of call of the Japanese Antarctic Research Icebreaker ‘Shirase’ in Sydney

The Japanese icebreaker ‘Shirase’, carrying the Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition (JARE), arrived in Sydney on March 20 on its way from Showa Station in Antarctica back to Japan. At a reception held onboard on the evening of the same day, Captain Koji Miyazaki, Consul-General Keizo Takewaka, The Hon. David Elliott, Minister for Counter Terrorism, Minister for Corrections, and Minister for Veterans Affairs and CDRE Luke Charles-Jones, CSC, OAM, RAN, Chief of Staff for Fleet Headquarters (representing Fleet Commander RADM Jonathan Mead) gave their speeches.

“Enjoy My Japan” Campaign Launch Event

On 14 March, JNTO (Japan National Tourism Organization) hosted the “Enjoy My Japan” Campaign Launch Event in Sydney. During the event, special guest Mr Nick Farr-Jones, who is a former Wallabies Captain, introduced various Japanese attractions. Consul-General Keizo Takewaka, in his speech, expressed his expectation that this seminar would provide attendees with ample opportunity to develop new and exciting tour programs.

Opening Lecture by Mr Kentaro Sonoura, Special Advisor to the Prime Minister

On 8 March, Mr Kentaro Sonoura, Special Advisor to the Prime Minister, gave the opening lecture explaining the free and open Indo-Pacific strategy at the seminar, “Rethinking Security in the Indo-Pacific Region: A Diplomatic Debate”, co-hosted by the Centre for International Security Studies of the University of Sydney.

JET Programme Returnee’s Night

On 2 March, the JET Programme Returnee’s Night was held at the Consul-General’s official residence to welcome the JET participants who returned last year. Consul-General Keizo Takewaka delivered an opening address. In his address, he expressed his appreciation for their invaluable service to the programme and expectation that they will continue to enrich the relationship between Japan and Australia.

During the event, returnees were invited to make presentations about their experiences during the programme, as well as network with other attendees, including representatives from CLAIR Sydney and JETAA NSW.

Consul-General Takewaka’s Visit to Goulburn Mulwaree

On 27 February, Consul-General Keizo Takewaka visited Goulburn Mulwaree Council, which has a sister city relationship with Shibetsu City in Hokkaido prefecture. In addition to a meeting with the Mayor, Cr Bob Kirk, Consul-General Takewaka participated in a reception hosted by the Goulburn Mulwaree Council and exchanged views with council members, city officials, police officials, school officials and others. Consul-General Takewaka also paid a courtesy call on the Hon. Pru Goward, NSW Minister for Family and Community Services, Minister for Social Housing, and Minister for the Prevention of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault and Member for Goulburn.

State Minister for Foreign Affairs Mr Kazuyuki Nakane visits Sydney

On 23 February, the State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Kazuyuki Nakane, visited Sydney, and met with the Minister for International Development and the Pacific, Senator the Hon Concetta Fierravanti-Wells.

State Minister Nakane said he would like to build a closer working relationship with Pacific Island nations based on the common notion of a “free and open Indo-Pacific” through platforms like the PALM8 (8th Pacific Islands Leaders Meeting) being held in May, and to strengthen the special strategic partnership between Japan and Australia.

In response, Minister Fierravanto-Wells explained that Japan’s vision of the Indo-Pacific region had many points in common with Australia’s, and she could see many areas in which the two nations could cooperate.

After a short exchange about each nation’s work in the region, the ministers agreed that, including at PALM8, Japan and Australia would continue to work closely together.

Also, State Minister Nakane joined the NSW Minister for Multiculturalism and Disability Services, the Hon. Raymond Williams for lunch where they exchanged a wide range of views about the relationship between Japan and Australia. He then met President of the Legislative Council of NSW, the Hon. John Ajaka, and discussed the strengthening of relations between Japan and NSW.

Consul-General Takewaka’s Visit to Darwin

On 19 February, a commemorative service was held in the Northern Territory city of Darwin, to remember the 76th Anniversary of the Bombing of Darwin. Consul-General Keizo Takewaka was invited to participate and laid a wreath.

During his visit to Darwin, Consul-General Takewaka paid a visit to the Administrator of the Northern Territory, Her Honour the Hon. Vicki O'Halloran AM. Consul-General Takewaka also met with the Chief Minister, the Hon. Michael Gunner, the Right Worshipful the Lord Mayor of Darwin, Kon Vatskalis and members of the Japanese community in Darwin.

Discover Tokushima Tourism Seminar

On 6 February, the Discover Tokushima Tourism Seminar was held in Sydney. The seminar highlighted Tokushima’s attractions, its natural beauty and outdoor activities such as rafting. There was also a performance of Awa Odori, a traditional folk dance performed during festival periods in Tokushima. The Consulate’s latest issue of 「Japan Reports」 covers the attractions of Tokushima.

Japan-Australia Quasi-Zenith Satellite System (QZSS) Industrial Utilisation Workshop

On 6 February, Consul-General Keizo Takewaka attended the Japan-Australia Quasi-Zenith Satellite System Industrial Utilisation Workshop. In his opening remarks, Mr Takewaka mentioned the MOC on innovation signed between Japan and Australia, and noted innovation is a crucial driving force for the region as well as both nations’ prosperity. The seminar attracted around 130 attendees from Australia and Japan.

Japan Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Sydney “New Year Seminar”

On 5 February, Consul-General Keizo Takewaka attended a New Year Seminar organised by the Japan Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Sydney. In his opening remarks, Mr Takewaka touched upon the Japan-Australia relationship being as prosperous as ever, as he wished for JCCI’s continued success, and the further deepening of economic ties between Japan and Australia. The seminar was followed by lectures from Dr Richard Koo of the Nomura Research Institute, and Mr Yuji Shimanaka of Mitsubishi UFJ Morgan Stanley Securities Co. Ltd.

Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs Mr Iwao Horii visits Sydney

On 3 February, Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr Iwao Horii visited Sydney. During the visit, Mr Horii visited a Japanese Language Supplementary School and spoke with teachers and observed lessons. Mr Horii also met with Father Paul Glynn and exchanged views on the Australian-Japanese relationship. After the end of World War II, Father Glynn promoted reconciliation between Australia and Japan, and was devoted to establishing the first sister city between the two countries.

2018 Swimming NSW State Open Championships

Between 19 and 21 January, the 2018 NSW State Open Championship was held at the Olympic Park Aquatic Centre. The Japanese national team took part and Australian Olympic Medalists also participated. On 20 January, Consul-General Keizo Takewaka visited the championships to support the team as well as to award medals. Young swimmers of “Tobiuo Japan” (a nickname of the Japan national swimming team) performed strongly, winning the women’s 4x200m Freestyle Relay and other events.

“Join the Dots” opening reception

On 16 January, Consul-General Keizo Takewaka partcipated in the opening reception of “Join the Dots” held at the Sydney Opera House. At the opening reception, The Hon Julie Bishop MP, Minister for Foreign Affairs, mentioned the further deepening of Japan-Australia relations through culture, in her speech. “Join the Dots” is an art project linking the Art Museum and Library in Ōta, Guma-prefecture and the Sydney Opera House.

Consul-General Takewaka’s visit to New Caledonia

From 11 to 13 January, Consul-General Keizo Takewaka visited New Caledonia. Mr Takewaka met with the Japanese Association in New Caledonia, Amicale Japonaise (New Caledonia Japan Friendship Association) and representatives of Japanese businesses. He laid a wreath at the Japanese cemetery and held discussions with government officials in New Caledonia.
