Visa Required Document Details

Specific Visas (Spouse or Child of Japanese National, Designated Activities & Long-term Resident)

1. Spouse or Child of Japanese National

Personal relationship or status for which the residence is authorised: the spouses of Japanese nationals; children adopted by Japanese nationals in accordance with the provisions of Article 817-2 of the Civil Code (Law no. 89 of 1896); or those born as the children of Japanese nationals.

Period of stay: 1 year or 3 years


An applicant must either obtain a Certificate of Eligibility or read the next section (Spouse of Japanese National Visa, Child of Japanese National Visa) for an alternative procedure.

 

Please note that the procedure given is only a general one and requirements do vary according to nationality. Please contact the visa section directly to avoid confusion and save time.

<Spouse of Japanese National Visa>

Visa for a legal spouse of a Japanese national to accompany that Japanese spouse to Japan.

REQUIREMENTS

1. A valid passport with at least 2 spread blank visa pages
2. A valid Australian visa (Please access the VEVO site to check and print out your visa information.)
3. One completed visa application form (Sample)
* Please fill in all the lines without leaving any blank. If a question is not applicable, please put “N/A” or “No”.
4. One passport sized photo (4.5cm x 3.5cm or 2in. x 2in. (taken within 6 months))
5. Flight booking confirmations of all the destination flights (full flight details from an accredited travel agent or airline)
* If you will not fly from one airport to another airport, please provide a typed explanation letter.
* We do not require the purchase of tickets or payment of any booking fee, but we do require a confirmed reservation. We are not responsible for tickets which may become unusable due to the delay or denial of a visa.
6. An official copy of the Japanese spouse's family register (Koseki Tohon).
    These copies must have been issued within three months prior to application for the visa and must show the registered marriage
7. A copy of spouse's Japanese passport
8. A letter of guarantee and invitation from your spouse's parents or from your spouse's employer (in Japan)
9. Documents proving guarantor's financial capabilities (such as Certificate of income or Tax payment showing annual income, etc.)

<Child of Japanese National Visa>

Visa for a child of a Japanese national to live in Japan

REQUIREMENTS

1. A valid passport with at least 2 spread blank visa pages

3. One completed visa application form (Sample)
* Please fill in all the lines without any blank. If it is not applicable, please put “N/A” or “No”.
4. One passport sized photo (4.5cm x 3.5cm or 2in. x 2in. (taken within 6 months))
5. Flight booking confirmations of all the destination flights (full flight details from an accredited travel agent or airline)
* If you will not fly from one airport to another airport, please provide a typed explanation letter.

6. An official copy of the Japanese parent's family register (Koseki Tohon). These copies must have been issued within three months prior to application for the visa and must show the registered birth
7. A copy of Japanese parent's passport(s)
8. A letter of guarantee/invitation from someone in Japan, preferably a Japanese relative
9. Documents proving guarantor's financial capabilities (such as Certificate of income or Tax payment showing annual income, etc.)
10. An original of the applicant's full birth certificate. Both parents' names should be mentioned

2. Designated Activities

Activities authorised to engage in: Activities that are specifically designated by the Minister of Justice for foreign individuals. (For example, activities on the part of foreigners who wish to enter Japan as personal help privately employed by diplomats, consular representatives, etc.; foreigners who are employed by companies, etc. and are active as athletes in amateur sports and their dependent spouses and children; foreign lawyers engaged in international arbitration affairs, etc.;and university students engaged in internship activities.)

Period of stay: 5 years, 4 years, 3 years, 2 years, 1 year, 6 months, or a designated period of less than 3 years
An applicant must obtain a Certificate of Eligibility to apply for this visa.

3. Long-term Resident

Personal relationship or status for which residence is authorised: Includes refugees as stipulated by the convention relating to the Status of Refugees, Indochinese refugee settlers, second- and third-generation Japanese settlers, etc.

Period of stay: 1 year or 3 years.
An applicant must obtain a Certificate of Eligibility to apply for this visa.
